Questo grande evento americano è definito banalmente "gli Oscar di Broadway".
Il Tony (dedicati a Antoinette Perry, fondatrice dell'American Theatre Wing) è un premio annuale che celebra i conseguimenti raggiunti nei teatri americani, includendo i musical.
Assegnato da quasi 700 giudici da diversi campi industriali e giornalistici, è l'equivalente agli Oscar, Emmy e Grammy.
La cerimonia del premio è trasmesso in televisione e prevede l'esibizione delle canzoni dei musical candidati, così come dei videoclip o una presentazione delle rappresentazioni candidate.
Diverse settimane prima della cerimonia viene pubblicata una lista dei candidati al premio. L'eleggibilità è garantita solo a quegli show presentati durante la stagione passata a Broadway (aver chiuso non significa automaticamente ineleggibilità, ma è risaputo che i votanti favoriscono spettacoli ancora in corso).
Ai fini del premio, uno spettacolo o musical "nuovo" deve non essere stato prodotto precedentemente a Broadway e non deve essere parte di "repertorio storico o popolare".
